Cookie notice

This notice lists what is stored in your browser when you read the register, why it is there, and how to be rid of it. It sits alongside the privacy notice, which covers personal information more broadly.

1. What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a site asks your browser to keep and hand back on the next visit. Related technologies do the same job by other means: local storage and IndexedDB keep values inside the browser, and a service worker is a small script the browser keeps in order to receive push notifications. Everything described below covers all three.

2. Necessary

Needed for the site to work and to remember the choice you made in the consent notice. These are set without asking, because without them nothing on the page can be remembered at all.

• bt-cookie-choice — local storage entry recording whether you accepted or declined the optional categories. Kept until you clear your browser storage. Set by this site.
• Hosting and security entries — session-level values used by the hosting infrastructure to serve pages and to filter abusive traffic. Session, or up to 30 days.

3. Analytics

Set only if you accept. Used in aggregate to count visits, see which entries are opened and find pages that fail to load.

• Visit measurement — a short identifier that distinguishes one visit from another. Up to 14 months. No name, no address, no attempt to identify you personally.

4. Advertising

Set only if you accept. Used to confirm that an advertising placement was shown and to count clicks on labelled outbound links.

• Placement measurement — identifiers set by advertising partners when a placement is displayed. Up to 13 months, according to the partner's own policy.

How placements relate to the editorial content is set out in the terms of use: they buy a labelled link and nothing else.

5. Push notifications and OneSignal

The register update is delivered through OneSignal, which acts as our processor. Its SDK loads with each page so the notification prompt can be offered, and it may write local identifiers into your browser's storage. A push subscription is created only after you allow notifications in the browser prompt; until then nothing is sent to you.

• OneSignal subscription record — an identifier for your browser, plus technical attributes such as browser type, language and country-level location. Kept until you unsubscribe or ask for removal.
• OneSignalSDKWorker.js — the service worker the browser keeps in order to receive notifications. Removed when you revoke the notification permission.

6. How to refuse or clear them

• The consent notice. Choose Decline and the optional categories are not set. Clear your browser storage and the notice appears again on your next visit.
• Browser settings. Every current browser can block or delete cookies and site data, either for all sites or for this one. In Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge the control sits under privacy or site settings.
• Notifications. Revoke the notification permission for this site in your browser settings, and the push subscription stops immediately.
• E-mail. Use the unsubscribe link in any update, or write to the editor.

Blocking the necessary category may stop parts of the site from behaving as intended — the consent notice, for one, will have nowhere to record your answer.

7. Changes

If the categories or the providers change, this page is updated and the date at the top changes with it.
